Ngo Unveils First Abuja Food Bank For Widows, Others

Helpline Foundation for the needy has launched a food bank for widows in Abuja, The Federal capital territory aimed at the basic needs of less privileged widows. Specifically, the Ngo said the food bank which is located at Diplomats Park at Area1 Abuja has been designed to routinely provide foodstuffs and other essential commodities to indigent persons especially widows in the FCT and its environs.

 

During the event held at the weekend the president of the helpline Foudation for the Needy, Mrs Jumai Ahmadu disclosed that the official lunch was part of efforts to show love and care to the needy in the society.According to her in order to sustain the scheme, spirited members of the public are encouraged to always send their donations to the food bank.It is our desire to celebrate this year’s valentine day in a special way. The food bank launched today is the first of its kind in Abuja and most probably in Nigeria.

It serves as an avenue to further demonstrate our love and compassion to widows and other less privileged in the society. “The Abuja launch will be the pilot scheme where we will distribute assorted foodstuffs to widows from different area councils of the territory. In other words we will be distributing foodstuffs to the needy periodically” she stressed. Ahmadu further disclosed that 250 widows that attended the launch went home with assorted foodstuffs , even as she called on the public to assist the less privileged in the society with a view to addressing  some social vices that could be triggered by poverty.

Speaking on what inspires her to establish a food bank, Mrs Ahmadu said, the passion to assist the less privileged in the society as the motivating factor.In the past we have been involved in different ways of assisting the less privileged in Abuja and in every festivity, we engage them in funfair and award of scholarship to different levels of education.“However, my recent trip in Maryland in the United States of America made to come up with the idea of establishing a food bank because I saw how wealthy individuals donate food items to a particular shop for upward distribution to the needy” I was impressed with what I saw and I felt ,it is noble idea worth domesticating in Nigeria.

The founder used the occasion to commend the federal Capital Territory Social Development Secretariat for ensuring that destitute are out of the streets of Abuja. Also she enjoined spirited individuals in the FCT to compliment the efforts of government in keeping destitute off the streets. Earlier, in his remarks at the occasion the Executive Director National Council of Child Rights Advocates of Nigeria Achibong Anderson said the shift of the the general elections was for good of the Foundation to show love to the needy as the day coincides with Valentine’s Day. Some of the beneficiaries who spoke to newsmen expressed satisfaction over the kind gesture by Mrs ahmadu through the Helpline Foundation for the Needy, even as they prayed to God for the substance of the scheme

People’s daily reports that the high point of the event was the distribution of assorted foodstuffs to no fewer than 250 women mainly widows from five organized groups namely :Helpline Foundation, Women Salama Love Widows, Integrity Women, 100 Unit and Kabusa Home Alone, respectively.
